Jakarta. President Joko Widodo installed Adm. Yudo Margono as the navy chief of staff and Air Chief Marshal Fadjar Prasetyo as the new commander of the Air Force during a ceremony at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.

Yudo, 54, replaces Siwi Sukma Adji who entered retirement age this month, while Fadjar, 54, took over the role from Yuyu Sutisna also under a similar circumstance.

The swearing-in ceremony was held modestly with the presence of only a few attendants, all wearing face masks to follow health protocol amid the Covid-19 outbreak and separating themselves within a safe distance.

Yudo, a 1988 graduate of the Naval Academy, was the commander of the 1st Joint Defense Territories prior to his current promotion. He was recently involved in the country’s Covid-19 Task Force, taking charge of the makeshift hospitals at the athletes’ village in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Galang Island, Riau Islands Province and on Sebaru Island, Jakarta.

Yudo was instrumental in the repatriation of more than 230 Indonesian citizens from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus outbreak originated, and their quarantine at a military base on Natuna Island in February.

Between 2016 and 2019, the native of Madiun, East Java, held key posts at the western fleet command and other major naval bases across the country. During his early years with the Navy, Yudo joined touring duties with at least six warships.

Fadjar, who graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1988, was known as an American-made A-4 Skyhawk jetfighter pilot at the 11th Air Base, Sultan Hasanuddin Airport, in Makassar, South Sulawesi in 1990-95.

Before being installed as the country’s 23rd Air Force chief of staff, he was the commander of the 2nd Joint Defense Territories.

The Jakarta-born pilot had played a key role in various environmental and humanitarian operations including during the forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan and the earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi.

He was also in charge of a mission to rescue victims during violent riots in Wamena, Papua, last year.
